My favorite song is Taxi Cab by Twenty One Pilots. I think the purpose of this song is to tell a story but also its a declaration of love to one person, the rest of the audience just gets to hear about it. In the first four stanzas the song describes feelings of belonging together using phrases like "And I want everyone to know that I am half a soul divided" implying that whoever the song is for completes the singer. This blurs the line of who the audience is because it appears as though the song is for the singer's love interest and everyone else is a secondary audience. Typically Twenty One Pilots songs are heavy on metaphors, messages, and carry heavy meaning. The typical message would go along with a sort of "Keep Calm and Carry on" attitude, meaning everything will be alright in the end. Maybe then, the phrase "Don't be afraid." and "Don't be afraid. We're going home" is the message to the whole audience saying its all going to be alright. Any Ethos, or credibility, present is due to the band's popularity but not backed up by any credentials. It is also lacking in logos because of its lack of facts or statistics. Taxi Cab uses pathos, or emotion, to convey its message. It tells a story and expresses feelings and details to help the listener feel the same emotions invoked when the song was written. The style reflects the message of the song because of the instruments and singing style. It has a strong piano throughout, showing a serious yet tender side which would reflect a conversation about loving someone who feels unloved and telling them they are going to be okay in the end. Twenty One Pilots style is to have a rap-style portion, which is where the actual story begins creating a clear line between that and the feelings of the singer towards the primary audience. Although Twenty One Pilots, and the song Taxi Cab, are in the alternative genre I believe it is better as a sub genre. The sound type and style is similar to other alternative artists but the change in pace and heavy reliance on a non-traditionally alternative instrument like the piano lends it to be a sub genre.
