This is a very recognizable image from the 1940's promoting recruitment into the US Army. It was aimed to rally the young men of the United States to fight for their country and serve in oder to defeat the axis powers on both the Pacific and European fronts. Aimed to instill pride, nearly guilting those not wanting to serve, this poster quite literally points to the up and coming men telling them to take up arms. The appeal uses pathos and ethos, ethos from the fictional figure "Uncle Sam" who represents America, and using pathos to bring out feelings of patriotism and bravery for their country and rage against the enemy. This uses an image, and face to face interaction (during the time it was used) to persuade its audience. The design is formal and upright, which is almost like orders already being given. This adds to the military roots adding in an element of seriousness and reflects the life that it is trying to persuade people to join. This piece has been adapted throughout the years, it can be seen in films but is generally a poster. The style changes but even still it keeps the figure and thus the seriousness and patriotic feel of the piece throughout its adaptations.
